Alvarez quickly dominated the cage and pressed Lapicus against the cage. In the clinching position Alvarez through arm shots, some of them seemed to be hitting around the ear or the back of the head. “The Underground King” was warned by referee Justin Brown specifically to watch for the placement of those shots, as they appeared to him hitting the back of the head.

The action resumed as Alvarez continued to attack with similar shots, albeit they looked as though they don’t posses much behind them. However Lapicus crumbled to the mat as a result of damage or gamesmanship. This prompted ONE FC Referee Justin Brown to pull out the red card and disqualify Alvarez. The Philadelphia native was very unhappy with the call in the aftermath of ONE FC on TNT. “I went back to my room and I was able to watch the clip of the fight and see everything and it was a bad call on the referee’s side,” said Alvarez during his post-fight press conference. “The American media is in uproar right now and so are the American fans. I’m going to respectfully ask them to look back at the video and reverse the call.”

Eddie Alvarez Adamant He Did Not Break the Rules

“Iuri was turning his head the other way and the ref warned me. He said to me, ‘Back of the head Eddie’, so you see me take my hand and start shoving his head toward my punch,” Alvarez said in a post-fight interview with Mitch Chilson.

“As long as it’s the ear, it’s legal, but you guys put me in a cage, the referee’s here … whatever call he makes, I apologise.

“I hope Iuri is totally fine because this game is so dangerous,” Alvarez added, choking back tears. “And all I care about is that everybody in here sincerely is safe and can go back to their family when they’re done.

“I’m praying for Iuri but you put me in a cage, I don’t know what to do in here. I’m trying to survive. You gotta respect the ref’s call but I’m doing my best in here. Prayers go out to Iuri right now.

Alvarez believes the situation will be corrected after ONE championships reviews the replay of the fight. Once the organization will officially view the fight reply, they will overturn it. At least according to Alvarez.
